چکیده

Results of a feasibility study for the use of the Q-band EPR measurements of fingernails are presented. Details of the first protocol developed for Q-band (34 GHz) EPR dose measurements in fingernails and preliminary results of a dosimetry study in comparison with the commonly-used X-band (9 GHz) are reported. It was found that 1e5 mg sample mass was sufficient for EPR measurements in fingernails in the Q-band, which is significantly less than the 15e30 mg needed for the X-band. This finding makes it possible to obtain sufficient fingernail sample for dose measurements, practically from every finger of any person. Another finding was that the spectral resolution of the mechanically-induced signal (MIS) and radiation-induced signal (RIS) in the Q-band was significantly better than in the X-band. The RIS and MIS in the Q-band spectrum have a more complex structure than in the X-band, which potentially offers the possibility to do dose measurements in fingernails without treatment and immediately after clipping. These findings and recent results related to fingernail dosimetry in the Q-band and its perspectives are discussed here. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Effects of water on fingernail electron paramagnetic resonance dosimetry

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is a promising biodosimetric method, and fingernails are sensitive biomaterials to ionizing radiation. Therefore, kinetic energy released per unit mass (kerma) can be estimated by measuring the level of free radicals within fingernails, using EPR. However, to date this dosimetry has been deficient and insufficiently accurate. In the sampling processes and m...

State of the art in nail dosimetry: free radicals identification and reaction mechanisms

Until very recently, analysis of bone biopsies by means of the method of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) collected after surgery or amputation has been considered as the sole reliable method for radiation dose assessment in hands and feet. EPR measurements in finger- and toenail have been considered for accident dosimetry for a long time. Human nails are very attractive biophysical materi...

Enhanced EPR Dose Reconstruction in Teeth

Currently electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) retrospective biodosimetry with tooth enamel can measure doses as low as 30 mGy. This method uses commercial X-band (9.5 GHz) EPR spectrometers and specially prepared samples from tooth enamel. One of the disadvantages of X-band EPR dosimetry is the requirement to obtain isolated teeth from a cohort of interest. In vivo EPR retrospective biodosime...

A new Q-band EPR probe for quantitative studies of even electron metalloproteins.

Existing Q-band (35 GHz) EPR spectrometers employ cylindrical cavities for more intense microwave magnetic fields B1, but are so constructed that only one orientation between the external field B and B1 is allowed, namely the B perpendicular B1 orientation, thus limiting the use of the spectrometer to measurements on Kramers spin systems (odd electron systems). We have designed and built a Q-ba...

Long Distance Measurements up to 160 Å in the GroEL Tetradecamer Using Q-Band DEER EPR Spectroscopy.

Current distance measurements between spin-labels on multimeric protonated proteins using double electron-electron resonance (DEER) EPR spectroscopy are generally limited to the 15-60 Å range. Here we show how DEER experiments can be extended to dipolar evolution times of ca. 80 μs, permitting distances up to 170 Å to be accessed in multimeric proteins. The method relies on sparse spin-labeling...
